Unlike the Southern border, the border between Canada and the USA is very tightly controlled. When the real Larissa crossed back into Canada, the Canadian authorities knew it. The real Larissa also heard that "she" had been arrested. She was relieved to find out her mother wasn't ill but she also knew she needed to disappear, which she did. She had some account numbers with lots of cash in them she had run across in her job and she took her mother and they left for parts unknown.
The faux Larissa arrived in Canada soon after and discovered "she" could not transfer money from the USA banks to Canadian Banks without having an account already set up. Without funds, she was forced to use a public defender who was more interested in her breasts than her innocence. Canadian prisons were nicer than US prisons but that was of little concern to the new Larissa when she realized how old she would be when she got out of prison several decades from now. By then, the safety deposit box would be emptied after they stopped getting paid for it's rental.
